[What Goes] Passing The Baton

2009 July 30

During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, USA suffered one major setback. Darvis Patton and Tyson Gay, Dtwo wonderful American athletes, dropped the baton on the 4×100 relay, disqualifying the US Team.

Just one mistake.

The Amaranth, our very own  publication, continues to thrive in VSU since its revival five years ago. Now with a full-color magazine, occasional mini-editions and a blog, the legacy has been effectively passed on through four sets of staff.

We are at a critical time of passing this on to the fifth. read more…

AmaranthVSU Blog stats as of June 22, 2009.

AmaranthVSU Blog stats as of June 22, 2009.

With the first release of the new Amaranth magazine to continuing students on Friday, June 19, the Amaranth saw a steep rise of visits to its blog. As seen above, the Views Per Day count for June 19 went as high as 30 views, not the usual range of 0-5.

AmaranthVSU has been widely promoted throughout the pages of Amaranth releases since its conception in August 2008. Views per day were observed to rise from the usual average on the first few days after a release of a magazine or any other issue such as the Intramural Editions on September 2008 and the most recent Magazine “What Education Are We Getting?” to the graduates on Graduation Day, April 3, and last Friday to continuing students.

Amaranth First Issue Release Delayed, says Chief

2008 December 3
by Amaranth

Amaranth’s release of its first issue for this school year will be postponed until mid-December 2008 or January 2009, informs Jed Cortes, Amaranth’s Editor-in-Chief, during the Student Federation Assembly on October 27, 2008.

“First sem has passed and I know you are already looking for the Amaranth’s first issue,” Jed says, speaking to the students packed in the University Gymnatorium. “It should have been in your hands by this time, but it’s not.”

The sophomore Chief Editor gave four reasons for the delay: the late organization of this school year’s staff, the publication’s commitments during the Intramurals and the SCUUA 2008 Regional Meet, red tape and very few articles.

“We’ve finished all the tedious bureaucratic processes just to print this issue. The canvassing is done and the papers are ready. The Printing press is ready as well. Around P200,000 worth of Amaranth money is ready to be shelled out. We are trying our best to catch up and mid-December or January would be just enough time for the staff to do that. However, there are just very few articles aside from those written by our editors, that’s why we need you to bring in your articles as soon as possible.”

The 2nd Student Federation Assembly, a semestral gathering of students, was spearheaded by the University Supreme Student Council.

“We know students have concerns and issues so it’s good to hear from them to widen our insight on student governance and public service,” says Christopher Ray Pantin, the USSC President and Student Regent. “It’s not everyday that they can easily air out their grievances and not everyone wants to write.”

The Amaranth Website-blog has announced how to submit articles. The announcement of the delay has also been posted in the site.

The Amaranth staff has already released an Intramural Edition during the 2008 University Intramural Games. Four of the staff were also invited to participate during the SCUAA 2008 Regional Meet in Southern Leyte State University, Sogod, Southern Leyte.

“Indeed, the Amaranth is working and (the staff) can really beat deadlines,” says Prof. Aleli Villocino, head of the Institute of Human Kinetics (IHK), on the Amaranth Website. “It was a good start so let us forge this linkage and continue to work for VSU.”

The Amaranth-IHK association continues to the university’s hosting of the upcoming SCUAA 2009 Regional Meet on October 2009. The Amaranth will be spearheading the SCUAA Updates, says Prof. Villocino.

IHK Presents Plans for SCUAA 2009

2008 December 3

As part of the university’s hosting of the 25th State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) Regional Meet on October 2009, the Institute of Human Kinetics (IHK) presented its plans for the week-long activity. The plans include the recruit of man-power for the different committees and the renovation of sports facilities in the campus.

Prof. Aleli Villocino, head of the IHK, presented a slide show of the proposal as part of the Sports Development Program-Strategic Planning Workshop, a whole day activity held at the Institute of Strategic Research and Development Studies (ISRDS) on October 28, 2008.

“Many of our sports facilities are substandard,” notes Prof. Vicente Antipaso, an IHK Faculty, helping out Prof. Villocino. “The basketball court, which is sub-standard, needs to be renovated. The volleyball courts will also be repositioned to accommodate the standard free space of 5-7 m.”

“The lower campus oval, also sub-standard, will be used mainly for the soccer event,” Prof. Antipaso says. “The running events will be held at the upper campus oval, which is still undergoing development.”

“We have talked to the Dr. Bacusmo, Dr. Guarte and other officials,” says Prof. Aleli. “We have their support for our plans but it is yet informal.”

Dr. Jose Bacusmo, the University President and the Vice-Presidents were supposed to be present during the said presentation. They weren’t able to come due to the University Academic Council (UADCO) meeting being held simultaneously at the Convention Center.

Facilities improvement also includes the adding of another tennis hard court in place of the sepak takraw court, and the moving of the latter to another place, as announced by Prof. Antipaso.

The university will accommodate the different delegations in the dormitories. Accommodation is usually a problem when the SCUAA Regional Meet is held in other universities.

“Aside from our accommodation which the VSU really boasts about, we must show the other universities that we have the best management that we could have,” says Ma’am Aleli.

The IHK is proposing to amend the SCUAA Constitution and By-Laws.

“Every meet, there is a lot of disagreements and issues tackled by the Sports Committee,” Ma’am Aleli notes. “The Sports Directors of the different participating universities will be meeting on February to look into this.”

The SCUAA 2009 Theme will soon be formulated. The IHK also envisions establishing a permanent SCUAA Logo. The old SCUAA song will also be revived and re-arranged. We have to be consistent in this area. Every year, the hosting school wants to do their own thing in their own way,” Prof. Aleli adds.

“Everytime our University hosts the SCUAA Meet, everyone looks forward to it.”

The VSU (then ViSCA) last hosted the SCUAA Regional Meet on 2000.

According to IHK staff, it has been noted that the UP-Tacloban Campus joins only whenever the Meet is held in the VSU.

The SCUAA started in the Visayas State University on 1983 amongst a number of IHK faculty, including Prof. Thelma Zafra and retiring Prof. Eliseo Pastrano.

In its 25th Anniversary, SCUAA will be coming back to where it all started.

Release of Amaranth Issue Delayed

2008 November 22
by Jed

The first semestral issue for this school year will be released a little later than expected.

Year by year, the Amaranth aims to release at least two issues: one issue per semester. The first semester of SY2008-2009 has already passed and students could have been holding the first semester issue right now. However, due to a number of reasons, the staff could not keep up with coming up with a paper on time.

For everyone to understand this delay, let’s name a few reasons why it came about:

  1. This year’s set of staff was formed in the last week of July, nearly two months after the first semester class began. The VSU 84th Anniversary were also nearing that time. So it means everyone had been busy. Since the staff was organized late, so was the planning for the first publication.
  2. The Amaranth worked hand-in-hand with the IHK during the University Intramurals and the SCUAA 2008 Regional Meet. The staff was able to come up with two Intramural Editions. During the SCUAA 2008 Regional Meet, four staff was invited to come with the VSU delegation in Sogod. These people were the main working team for the first sem issue during the semestral break so it meant that the work has been vacated for a period of time.
  3. Red tape. Processing the necessary papers for the Amaranth to be able to print 4000 copies is not a small job. It entails more than P200,000 of Amaranth funds and weeks and months of waiting. Negotiating a canvassing transaction for the best printing press (and the cheapest at the same time) to cater to our needs is a slow process which the Supply Office looks over.
  4. There were not enough articles on the first issue’s theme: Re-Assessing the Quality of Education. While the editors are trying to come up with creative articles to tackle different concerns here in the university and abroad, the Amaranth still needs to hear the voice of students like you.

These are the four primary reasons why the Amaranth issue will be a bit late in its release. Hopefully, it will come out on mid-December or early January. With that, we hope that the necessity of this delay is well understood and our sincere apologies well taken.
