IHK Presents Plans for SCUAA 2009

2008 December 3

As part of the university’s hosting of the 25th State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) Regional Meet on October 2009, the Institute of Human Kinetics (IHK) presented its plans for the week-long activity. The plans include the recruit of man-power for the different committees and the renovation of sports facilities in the campus.

Prof. Aleli Villocino, head of the IHK, presented a slide show of the proposal as part of the Sports Development Program-Strategic Planning Workshop, a whole day activity held at the Institute of Strategic Research and Development Studies (ISRDS) on October 28, 2008.

“Many of our sports facilities are substandard,” notes Prof. Vicente Antipaso, an IHK Faculty, helping out Prof. Villocino. “The basketball court, which is sub-standard, needs to be renovated. The volleyball courts will also be repositioned to accommodate the standard free space of 5-7 m.”

“The lower campus oval, also sub-standard, will be used mainly for the soccer event,” Prof. Antipaso says. “The running events will be held at the upper campus oval, which is still undergoing development.”

“We have talked to the Dr. Bacusmo, Dr. Guarte and other officials,” says Prof. Aleli. “We have their support for our plans but it is yet informal.”

Dr. Jose Bacusmo, the University President and the Vice-Presidents were supposed to be present during the said presentation. They weren’t able to come due to the University Academic Council (UADCO) meeting being held simultaneously at the Convention Center.

Facilities improvement also includes the adding of another tennis hard court in place of the sepak takraw court, and the moving of the latter to another place, as announced by Prof. Antipaso.

The university will accommodate the different delegations in the dormitories. Accommodation is usually a problem when the SCUAA Regional Meet is held in other universities.

“Aside from our accommodation which the VSU really boasts about, we must show the other universities that we have the best management that we could have,” says Ma’am Aleli.

The IHK is proposing to amend the SCUAA Constitution and By-Laws.

“Every meet, there is a lot of disagreements and issues tackled by the Sports Committee,” Ma’am Aleli notes. “The Sports Directors of the different participating universities will be meeting on February to look into this.”

The SCUAA 2009 Theme will soon be formulated. The IHK also envisions establishing a permanent SCUAA Logo. The old SCUAA song will also be revived and re-arranged. We have to be consistent in this area. Every year, the hosting school wants to do their own thing in their own way,” Prof. Aleli adds.

“Everytime our University hosts the SCUAA Meet, everyone looks forward to it.”

The VSU (then ViSCA) last hosted the SCUAA Regional Meet on 2000.

According to IHK staff, it has been noted that the UP-Tacloban Campus joins only whenever the Meet is held in the VSU.

The SCUAA started in the Visayas State University on 1983 amongst a number of IHK faculty, including Prof. Thelma Zafra and retiring Prof. Eliseo Pastrano.

In its 25th Anniversary, SCUAA will be coming back to where it all started.

    hello jed,

i don’t know where to put this comment because there’s no ABOUT section in your blog but let me just say “bravo” for doing this. amaranth has been notorious for not publishing on time ever since i got into vsu (then visca) 12 years ago. making a blog just might change all that and i commend you and your team for this initiative.

i have a few suggestions though, if you don’t mind. i know you’ve been reading devcompage.com, that’s where i got the link to this page. get as many email addresses as you can and send invites. almost every batch from every course in VSU has a yahoogroup that connects them. you can post bulletins in friendster (or myspace and facebook, i don’t use these two). im sure word will quickly spread out especially among the alumni who are hungry for news from home. then you have multiply and wordpress, just make sure to use tags in your posts so other users can find you.

but you have to be prepared for the number of visitors to hit your blog. once word spreads out, there’s no stopping it. if you don’t regularly update your blog, they might not come back. you can get ideas from devcompage, ma’am moni is doing a great job updating and replying to all the comments and no one knows how much hard work that is.

cheers to you jed and the whole amaranth team!

Thanks for the compliments and insight, kuya Jo. However, we find it quite difficult to bring in more visitors to the AmaranthVSU Blog. The blogosphere is very much an alien concept to most VSU students. If not for DOTA, Friendster and occasional assignments, nothing would bring them to the net. Anyway, the Amaranth is releasing a magazine (hopefully) by February (probably mid), and we might as well get as much email addresses as possible. That is, we’ll let them sign their name and other info before they could get their copy. Probably we can catch more attention this time. Anyway, the blog have had quite a publicity since August 2008. Just that, they don’t seem to mind.

And…since the Dept of DevCom is under repair/construction/refurbishing, our internet connection in the Amaranth office is severed, so we are having difficulty updating our blog. We’re aware managing even one blog costs much time and effort, but improving the skill of the staff needs more attention (the junior staff needs a lot of improving).
